July 14: Circus music in concert

Posted: June 20, 2017

On Friday, July 14, Windjammers Unlimited will present a free concert of traditional American circus music in the Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School Auditorium at 7 p.m. Directed by James Roytz, former BBHHS band director, the concert is sponsored by the BBHHS band and band boosters.

“Windjammer” is the name given to old-time circus musicians who accompanied various acts. With over 400 members from across the country, Windjammers Unlimited, founded in 1971, meets twice a year. The annual convention is held each January in Sarasota, Fla., and the second event is held each July. At the meets, bands rehearse, record and perform traditional circus music from the Golden Era of the American Circus (1890-1930), composed by Henry Fillmore, Karl King, Fred Jewell, J.J. Richards and others.
