Aug 21: Richfield celebrates rare eclipse of the sun

Posted: August 2, 2017

A rare total solar eclipse will cut across North America on Aug. 21. In Richfield the moon will block four-fifths of the sun.

Since the eclipse coincides with the 50-year jubilee of Richfield Village’s founding, the Jubilee Planning Committee is throwing an Eclipse Party Aug. 21 at Richfield Woods Park from 1-3 p.m.

Free eclipse glasses, donated by Shulan’s Jewelers in Fairlawn and the Richfield United Church of Christ, will be given to the first 100 people in attendance. The glasses will permit safe viewing of the event.

At 1:10 p.m. the moon will appear to take a bite out of the sun. At 2:31 the solar eclipse will reach its maximum in Richfield, with the moon covering 81 percent of the sun. By 3:51 it will be over.

Without proper eye protection, it is dangerous to look at the sun. Homemade gadgets, such as blacked film, multiple sunglasses or smoked glass can cause permanent eye damage. Never look at the sun through binoculars or a telescope (unless it has been specifically equipped for that purpose), even while wearing eclipse glasses.

On April 8, 2024, Richfield will experience a total solar eclipse.
