April 13: Appalachian Service Project fundraising dinner and auction

For the past 45 years, members of Hudson United Methodist Church have taken part in a service project mission that allows church members from teens to adults to help those who are less fortunate. The service involves making homes in Appalachia safer, warmer and dryer. But, to get the members there, and buy supplies and tools, the HUMC members hold an Appalachian Service Project fundraising dinner and auction. This year’s auction is set for Friday, April 13, 6:30 p.m., at HUMC, 2600 Hudson Aurora Rd.

“I have been involved for 15 years, and it just is a life-changing experience,” said Bill Centrello, a HUMC church member and ASP organizer. “By taking part in the ASP service project, it really makes people think about the importance of service, about helping others. The young people have the opportunity to see what they have, be grateful for those things. Many of the young people move on from this service project and do mission work and service projects for the rest of their lives.”

The ASP auction organizers hope to raise $10,000 to fund the service trip to this year’s location, which is in West Virginia. The $10,000 provides funds for renting vans and buying supplies and equipment to repair and upgrade the Appalachian homes. Repairs include everything from mending roofs and renovating bedrooms to bringing in running water. Centrello said 14 church members are planning on making the ASP service trip July 8-14.

The ASP auction at HUMC includes both a silent auction and a live auction. Most of the auction items have been donated by community members and businesses. Organizers accept monetary donations. For more information or to donate to the ASP mission, visit hudsonumc.com/giving.html.
