Revere graduate ‘overcome with pride’ to be Ohio State Homecoming Queen

Miranda Koewler already considered her time at Ohio State University to be one of the best experiences of her life and was thrilled to make the Homecoming court.

So when the 2015 Revere High School graduate won the student vote to become OSU’s 2018 Homecoming Queen, “I was overcome with pride and joy to know I am representing a university that meant the entire world to me,” said Koewler. Sharing the honor with one of her best friends, Homecoming King Karsen Kaple, made it even better, she said.

Koewler wanted to try out for Homecoming court because of the impact Ohio State has made on her. “This university has greatly shaped me into who I am today,” she said.

Candidates for the Homecoming court filled out applications last spring and were initially vetted by grade point average and involvement in student and service activities. The top applicants were interviewed by a panel of faculty, staff and alumni, and scores from the applications and interviews were combined to select 10 women and 10 men to make up the court.

“I was informed I had been selected when a group from last year’s Homecoming court came into one of my meetings to surprise me,’’ Koewler said. “It was a really fun way to find out. I interviewed in late March and learned I had been selected in early April.”

The Homecoming court has major volunteer responsibilities on campus during both Welcome Week at the beginning of the academic year and Homecoming Week. Koewler said during Welcome Week, their primary duty was to act as a helping hand and a smiling face for new and returning students. This included volunteering at convocation, the student involvement fair and other events.

During Homecoming Week, Koewler said court members attended and volunteered at the kickoff event, participated in a traditions night for the court, rode in the Homecoming parade and appeared at the pep rally.

Homecoming court responsibilities will continue into 2019 when Koewler will help prepare next year’s court to have “as wonderful an experience as I did.”

Koewler is a senior with a GPA of 3.835. She is completing a major in strategic communications and a double minor in dance and music plus media and enterprise.

“As of right now, I am not sure what my [post] graduation plans are,’’ she said. “I am currently job hunting.”

Koewler’s parents, Jim and Laurie Koewler, live in Richfield. Her older brother Wesley was a 2011 Revere High School graduate and a 2016 OSU graduate.
