Reducing the Stress of Divorce and Estate Planning During a Pandemic

by Laurie Malone, Attorney and Mediator

Many people are holding off on addressing their legal needs during the pandemic. That only increases stress because it leads to a loss of control.

So, regaining a sense of control is the best way to reduce stress. Initial meetings for divorce and estate planning are for the client to understand their legal options and to develop a plan. Decisions do not need to be made at the first meeting. It is also up to the client to decide at what pace, how long they have, to move forward and take the next steps. Since decisions are not being made at the first meeting, clients going through a divorce do not usually have a problem residing in the same house.

Estate planning is one of those things that most people put off. Now that most people have more time on their hands, it’s a great time to get started. The best gift one can leave their family is an organized estate plan. It makes it much simpler, and often times less expensive, for a family to implement. Estate planning is not just for wealthy individuals.

Divorce and estate planning can be initiated virtually or in person, depending on the process.

The coronavirus does not have to stop the life decisions that are important. This is a good time to move forward, to focus on what’s important.
