Celebrate Parks and Recreation Month throughout July

Join friends and family this July during Parks and Recreation Month to celebrate how the city is stronger, more vibrant and more resilient because of parks and recreation amenities.

Parks and Recreation Month is an initiative of the National Recreation and Park Association, a nonprofit dedicated to building strong, vibrant and resilient communities through the power of parks and recreation.

A variety of activities are planned for residents of all ages and abilities throughout Independence parks, including:

Wednesday, July 3: Independence Day fireworks.

Wednesday, July 10: Concert in Elmwood Park. “Those Guys” will perform classic rock, pop and the music soundtrack of the past 40+ years.

Friday, July 19: Family outdoor movie night and campout.

Saturday, July 20: Hemlock Trail history hike with Kim Sowinski.

Thursday, July 25: Christmas in July at the outdoor pool.

NRPA and the city of Independence encourage everyone to share how parks and recreation support their well-being, and the valuable role local park and recreation professionals play, by using the hashtag #WhereYouBelong on social media.
