Superintendent’s Corner – Dana Addis

I always get excited this time each summer as the prospect of the new school year inches closer. Similar to New Year’s Eve, the first day of school signals a fresh start, with endless possibilities.

This year, the majority of students for Hudson City Schools return on Aug. 21. Our 10th- through 12th-grade students don’t return until Aug. 22, in order to give freshmen a day to get acquainted with the high school. The kindergarten classrooms are split by alphabet, with A-L returning on the Aug. 21 and M-Z coming back on the Aug. 22.

Soon, you will receive a district postcard in the mail from the communications office with important open house dates for the upcoming school year. I want to include those here, as well.

  • McDowell Early Learning Open House: Aug. 20, Grades PreK & K, 4-6 p.m.
  • Ellsworth Hill Elementary Open House: Aug. 20, Grades 1 & 2, 4-6 p.m.
  • East Woods Intermediate Open House: Aug. 19, Grades 3, 4 & 5,  4-6 p.m.
  • Hudson Middle School Registration Days: Aug. 14 & 15, 12-3 p.m. & 5-7 p.m. HMS will send a Sign-Up Genius link to select a time.
  • Hudson Middle School Open House Days: Aug. 28, Grade 6, 6-7:30 p.m.; Aug. 29, Grade 8, 6-7:45 p.m.; Sept. 4, Grade 7, 6-7:30 p.m.
  • Hudson High School Open House: Aug. 22, Grades 9 thru 12: 6-8 p.m.

In addition, you can find the 2024-2025 district school calendar and a graphic of calendar highlights at hudson.k12.oh.us. Speaking of the website, you will notice we launched a new site this summer, complete with an updated design, a searchable navigation feature and a dynamic event calendar.

I want to extend a warm welcome to several new administrators joining our team this year, including the new Assistant Superintendent and Director of Curriculum Angela Terella. Terella comes to Hudson from Waterloo Local Schools, where she served as superintendent. She has a long history in public education and is succeeding Doreen Osmun, who retired.

At McDowell Early Learning, you will find a new face as Principal Jennifer Hall now leads that building. Most recently, Hall was a principal in the New Philadelphia City School District. She takes over for Beth Trivelli, who also retired.

We also are excited to have Adam Brown joining Ellsworth Hill Elementary as an assistant principal and Bryan Bedford assuming the same position at East Woods Intermediate. Jamie Ganz will be moving from HMS to the high school to serve as a unit principal, while Jeremy Rothstein will take Ganz’ spot at the middle school.

I am excited to start my third school year as superintendent with Hudson City Schools. Until then, enjoy these slower days of summertime! ∞
