Revere announces 2024 Athletic Hall of Fame inductees

Seven Revere alumni, one coach and the 2013 boys soccer team were inducted into the Revere Athletic Hall of Fame at the school’s first home football game this season.

The hall of fame honors Revere High School graduates, coaches and contributors who helped to create and continue an excellent athletic tradition at Revere. A hall of fame selection committee chooses the recipients from a number of nominations.

The 2013 Boys Soccer team won the state championship over Columbus Bishop Waterson, earning the school’s first OHSAA state team tournament title and finishing the year 21-0-2. The team was ranked No. 1 in the Ohio Division II State Soccer poll the entire season and earned a No. 18 national ranking in the National Soccer Coaches Association USA poll. The team scored 101 goals, only allowed 11 and recorded 16 shutouts. Captain and two-time All-American Brandon Taylor, captain and two-time All-Ohio goalkeeper Joel Gerberich, and sophomore 1st team All District player and leading scorer Daniel Branch led the way for the Minutemen.

Jack Greynolds coached at Revere High School from 1957 to 1969. During that time, the athletic program was 206-60 and won eight league championships. He went on to coach at Barberton for the next 18 years, coaching basketball, baseball and football. He was named State Coach of the Year in 1976 and 1977. Greynolds has been inducted into the Barberton Sports Hall of Fame, the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame, Greater Akron Hall of Fame, the Ohio High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame and the Ohio High School Basketball Hall of Fame. Greynolds was named the Greatest High School Coach in Summit County in the last 50 years by the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame Committee and by a vote of the public. He passed away in 2005.

Eric Moats ’80 participated in football and baseball and was a manager for basketball. Moats worked as Revere’s athletic trainer for 23 years (1990-2013). In 2001, he was selected among applicants to serve as a volunteer athletic trainer assistant with Olympic athletes for a two-week period while they trained. In 2010, he was recognized with the Dave Elliot-Al Scholl Memorial Service Award “For service and loyalty to Revere football.” On Sept. 12, 2013, the athletic training room was officially named in his honor.

Brian Gabel ’83 excelled in football and wrestling. In wrestling, he was a four-year letter winner and a three-time district qualifier for the Minutemen. In football, he was a three-time first team All-Suburban selection and was part of the program that won three league championships. During his senior year, he was selected team captain, 1st Team All-Summit County, 1st Team All-District, and 2nd Team All-State. He was a leader in football for the University of Toledo Rockets and to played one year of American Football in Australia where he was a team captain and league MVP.

Pat Kirkland ’93 competed with the football and wrestling teams. In wrestling, he was a three-time letter winner and was a State Qualifier senior year. In football, he was a three-year letterman and was twice a 1st Team All-Suburban selection. Kirkland later became a football coach at Muskingum University, assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Glenville State University, then coach at West Virginia University before being named head coach at University of Charleston in 2011. In 2022 he was named the special teams coordinator at Division I, Jacksonville State.

Amy (Kloner) Kaplan ’95 was an athlete in tennis, basketball and track. She was part of a number of successful relay teams in track, and in tennis, was Revere’s No. 1 singles player for three years, culminating in a 4th place finish at state in doubles with teammate Christina (Dattilo) Cooper. She later turned to duathlons and triathlons. She won the 2007 Long Course Duathlon National Championship and 2007 Short Course Duathlon National Championship, and was crowned the Long Course Duathlon World Champion that same year. Kaplan was selected to race on the U.S. Pro Triathlon Team for Long Course World Championships in Perth, Australia, in 2008. She won Powerman Alabama three years in a row, and placed 3rd at the Duathlon Pro National Championships in 2012. 

Ben Deighton ’11 was a three-year letter winner for the Minutemen soccer team. In his senior year, he earned 1st Team All-Suburban League, All-District, and helped the team to a 2010 State Championship runner-up finish. In football, he kicked senior year earning All-Summit County honors while graduating with Revere’s all-time single season record for touchbacks and kickoff average. After four years of collegiate soccer, Deighton used his fifth year of eligibility as a kicker for Eastern Kentucky. Deighton was invited to the D1 FCS National Bowl and had a tryout at Cleveland Browns Pro Day in 2016. He finished his kicking career with a brief stint with the Cleveland Gladiators of the Arena Football League. 

Camryn Brown ’16 was a basketball player who was named 1st Team All-league all four years and helped Revere to a Suburban League Championship in 2016. Brown was a 1st Team All District NE Inland selection four times. She was a special mention All-Ohio her junior year and honorable mention All-Ohio her senior year. She graduated as the program’s 2nd all-time leading scorer. After graduating, she attended High Point University where she played in 121 games during her four years there while recording 1,305 points and 468 assists. She became the second player in school history to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American at the conclusion of her senior year. After graduating, Brown entered the coaching ranks, first at West Virginia State University as an assistant coach, and is now in her third season at Florida Gulf Coast University.

Caitlin Vari ’16 was a 2-year captain and 4-year Varsity Letterman for the girls basketball team. She was 1st Team All-Suburban League her first three years and was an Honorable Mention All-Ohio as a freshman and then Special Mention All-Ohio her sophomore and junior year. She was honored as the Cleveland Plain Dealer Player of the Week, received 1st Team accolades for the Tri-County Basketball Coaches Association and 2nd Team All District for Division 2. After graduation, she went on to play for the University of Akron where she played in 127 games, including 79 starts. ∞
