Brigadier General David Berkland announced that Capt. Jack Smith recently became a member of the Thunderbolt Airmen of the 56th Fighter Wing at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona. During training, Smith is learning to fly the F-35 in dogfighting against aerial adversaries, how to deliver precision-guided bombs on ground targets, and the ability to fight in combat-like campaigns.
A graduate of Revere High School and the United States Air Force Academy, Smith is the son of Jim and Linda Smith, now deceased.
He has sometimes piloted a plane that went over Richfield in formation at the time of the Memorial Day services.
Mark Pawuk, owner of Empaco in Richfield, has etched his name in racing history, clinching the 2024 Flexjet Factory Stock Showdown world championship at the National Hot Rod Association Midwest Nationals. With his Dodge Drag Pak, Pawuk secured the championship in a nail-biting semifinal round, ultimately defeating No. 1 qualifier Jonathan Allegrucci in the final. Starting his racing career in the 1970s and earning a Super Gas championship in 1981, Pawuk’s dream of an NHRA world championship is now a reality.
