Schneider recognized for new teaching strategy

Brecksville-Broadview Heights Middle School Health and Life Skills Teacher teacher Maria Schneider has been recognized for incorporating literacy-based skills in health education as part of an article published on #slowchathealth, a global online blog for health education teachers. Schneider authored the article, “Ignite Deep Learning in Skills-Based Health Education” and details how she integrates the instructional approach of Disciplinary Literacy into classroom instruction.
After participating in a district-sponsored professional development course three years ago with renowned disciplinary literacy expert and author, ReLeah Lent, Schneider said she felt inspired and equipped to help her students engage in the five big ideas of disciplinary literacy skills, which include reading, writing, thinking, doing/inquiry, and speaking.
Accordingly, students in Schneider’s classes engage in some type of literacy-based skill in the classroom every day.
During a recent Life Skills class lesson, students worked in groups on one of several key aspects of the interview process. Each group engaged in discussions to form responses to assigned questions and prompts which would then be used to create a fun and interactive presentation on their topic to the class.
