Avoid unwanted guests this season
Information provided by the Brecksville Police Department
The Brecksville Police Department reminds the public that the Christmas season is fast approaching, and residents should take special cautions to protect themselves from becoming a victim of a crime.
For example, if someone in your house purchases or receives something expensive as a gift, such as a television or computer, do not place the box at the curb without placing it in a trash bag. Leaving the box exposed, police say, is a sure-fire invitation for burglars, notifying them that new electronics are located in the home.
Additionally, as the holidays draw closer, residents are also advised not to leave gifts in plain sight of potential criminals who may be casing homes and neighborhoods.
The same goes for neighbors who may have a death in the family. Police say that neighbors should keep a close eye on neighboring properties during funeral and calling hours. Homes have been burglarized while the residents were attending calling hours or the funeral. Burglars watch for those times in newspapers and on online sources and enter the house knowing the occupants will be gone during those publicized hours.
During those times, those who see someone near the house are asked to contact police immediately.
Likewise, residents should never leave their vehicles unlocked in their driveways, or leave items in the car that may tempt a burglar, such as bags of gifts or even garage door openers. If you leave the door to the inside of your house unlocked, your garage door opener in your unlocked car is a quick ticket for unwelcome visitors. Brecksville Police said several incidents have happened in Brecksville and other communities after homeowners have made similar mistakes.
