Two Sagamore Hills police officers were recognized at the police awards ceremony on Jan. 28, and Carson Carrell was sworn in as the newest full-time officer.

Police Chief David Hayes swore in Carrell, who has been a police officer with Milton Township for two years. Carrell was in the Sagamore Police Explorers program for five years and was also part of the Milton Township volunteer fire department. He is earning his bachelor’s degree from Kent State University.
Officer Glenn Nicholl was named the 2024 Employee of the Year for his dedication as school resource officer at Rushwood Elementary School. The award is given to an employee that “stands above other employees in the performance of his/her job and who greatly contributes to the mission of Sagamore Hills Township Police Department.”
Hayes said police supervisors unanimously selected Nicholl for the honor. Lt. Brian Piekarski nominated Nicholl for the award, stating that he takes an active role interacting with students and staff daily.
He said Nicholl values getting to know students and “attends all student/parent intervention meetings and works with them for solutions if there is a problem.” Piekarski said the fact that Nicholl does more than just sit at the school and “be present” speaks volumes about his character.
Officer Glenn Lucore was given the 2024 Life Saving Award for his actions during a July call. Sgt. Ken Wolf nominated Lucore for responding to a call of a resident male possibly having a seizure. He arrived at the home just over one minute later and found the man had no pulse and was unresponsive to stimuli. Lucore instructed the man’s wife to start CPR while he prepared the police department AED machine. He used the machine to shock the man then took over CPR until Macedonia Fire/EMS arrived. EMS was able to restore the man’s pulse before transporting him to the hospital. “It is my belief that if not for the quick and appropriate response from Lucore that evening, we would have lost one of our residents,” said Wolf, adding that he spoke to the victim, who agreed that Lucore’s actions, along with the EMS, saved his life.
