Thank you, coaches for not making her choose
To the Editor:
Thank you, Brecksville Magazine, for highlighting the recent accomplishments of our BBHHS diver in the March 2025 issue. As parents, it has been an incredible experience watching our daughter compete and thrive in the sports she loves – diving and gymnastics.
This is a story of coaches from different sports who put the athlete first. Not only did they allow her to compete and miss practices or meets, but they actively cheered her on in both sports. As I sat in the stands at the state diving meet, the Bees’ gymnastics coaches texted me for updates, virtually holding my hand through an intense 11-dive competition. They cried with me when she won. During gymnastics districts, the Bees’ diving coach texted for updates and cheered her on throughout states.
Why is this story worth sharing? Because these coaches never forced my athlete to choose between her passions. There was no guilt, no pressure to sacrifice one sport for the other – only flexibility, compassion, and a genuine focus on her well-being. They recognized that she is not just an athlete, but a high school student. And the result? A bit of local history – two Division 1 championships in 10 days and a young athlete more motivated than ever.
To coaches everywhere, take a lesson from these incredible mentors. Your athletes may have multiple passions – let them pursue them. Give them the opportunity, and they will rise to the occasion. Let them win.
