The Vintage Rose offers creative customization
by Alex Vukoder
Crystal Rose Farlin parlayed her artistic talent and love of restoration and upcycling into a custom furniture and home décor business. The Vintage Rose is in the historic garage of the Farlin’s century home, “Hurd’s Corner,” 4674 West Bath Rd. This space doubles as her studio and showroom.
Farlin and her husband, Chuck, purchased the Hurd’s Corner home in 2017 and while renovating, strived to maintain the home’s historical character.
“When we got to the decorating phase, I realized that what I had in mind wasn’t on the market, so I started turning vintage furniture into works of art,” said Farlin.
Farlin’s journey to opening her studio is decades in the making. Her family, especially her grandfather and aunt, fostered her love of art from the time she was a young child. She said she has fond memories of learning perspective and the importance of the muscle system as she practiced drawing horses and Garfield the cartoon cat. As a young adult, Farlin started painting murals and logos for local businesses in her hometown of Orville with the Smuckers Gift Barn being one of her most well known murals.
“I opened The Vintage Rose studio to the public to provide an opportunity for visitors to watch the creative process and get inspiration for their own customized pieces,” explained Farlin.
She refinishes, upholsters and hand-paints furniture and décor items including chairs, chaise lounges, end tables, jewelry boxes and mirrors. Farlin likes to add a 3-D element to her pieces such as shells, fringe or jewels.
“My style is where artistry meets function,” said Farlin.
Customers can pick from a finished piece at Farlin’s studio or meet with her to discuss ideas. She has base items available for customization but can also personalize someone’s piece from home.
The Vintage Rose has public hours Monday-Friday, 6-8 p.m. and on select Saturdays and Sundays from 2-6 p.m. Make an appointment by calling 330-801-3323 or through Instagram @The_Vintage_Rose_by_Crystal. ∞
