Division Chaplain Deacon Bruce Dobbins rescued an injured barred owl, affectionately named Rupert, in June and it has been housed at the center since. The group of volunteers are trying to bring Rupert back to health so he can possibly be rehabilitated in the wild in the near future.

The Highland Foundation has announced that Anna Lanier, the first recipient of the prestigious George R. Ayres Memorial Fund Achievement Scholarship, has concluding her undergraduate studies.

Anna Lanier

As part of her four-year renewable scholarship, Lanier kept the Highland Foundation Scholarship Committee updated each year with letters detailing her academic journey, along with letters of recommendation.

Each year, she also sent a heartfelt thank-you note to the committee.

“Over the past four years, I have grown so much – academically and personally,” she said in the most recent note. “I owe a lot of this growth to the Highland Foundation and the George R. Ayres Scholarship. I am so grateful for your continued help and support. Thank you for helping me stay on the path to becoming a physician.”

Lanier graduated summa cum laude from The Ohio State University with honors in neuroscience research and has been accepted into medical school at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Karl Kastl III and Melissa Augustine

Melissa Augustine and Karl Kastl III have announced their engagement. Augustine has served Hinckley in many capacities over the years. In addition to serving as president and vice president of the Hinckley Elementary PTO, she also served as Hinckley Township trustee for five years. She is currently serving as vice president of the Hinckley Chamber of Commerce. Kastl grew up in Hinckley, which was his reason for purchasing and renovating Binky’s Commons, the historic building on the corner of state Routes 94 and 303 in downtown Hinckley. The couple says their love for Hinckley is as undeniable as their connection, and they are eager to start their lives as husband and wife. ∞
