Highland High School senior Luke Butcher has been named among the 16,000 semifinalists in the 70th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Butcher will have an opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 6,870 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $26 million that will be offered next spring.

Finalists will be named in February.

Highland High School senior Emma Smicklas was named Kiwanis Club of Medina Student of the Month for September.

Smicklas is a Highland High School senior who has completed over 10 Advanced Placement classes while earning both cum laude honors and a silver medal through her participation in the National Latin Exam. She has participated in a number of extracurricular activities, including speech and debate, where she earned varsity letters during all four years of membership while also becoming a state and national finalist.  She has participated in several musical groups, including treble chorale, the Redletter Quartet (lead vocalist). She is also president of the Highland Heartthrobs.

Smicklas has also participated as a member of the Highland golf team and the Highland Theater Program, where she had leading roles in Beverly Hillbillies and Little Women.

She is the daughter of Sarah and Brian Smicklas of Sharon Township.  Upon graduation, she intends to pursue a degree in pre-law. ∞
