Are You Movement Deficient?

The average American spends about 32 years sitting. It’s common to sit for 8 hours at work, go home, and sit at dinner, then sit on the couch for a few more hours before bed. This cycle repeats. Inactivity has become a big problem that’s contributing to why we’re so sick.
Many people think exercise is only for people who want to look good and be thin. But that’s not true. Movement and exercise are actually a natural part of being human. Our genes have been the same for the past 40,000 years, and we’ve always needed to move and exercise to survive.
Our ancestors had to hunt and gather or die. There was no time to sit around. They burned a lot of energy, but it wasn’t because they had to work out. It was just something they had to do to stay alive.
So, how much movement do we need? Well, it might surprise you: to get the same amount of energy that our healthier ancestors did, and to be healthy, we’d have to walk the equivalent of 12 miles a day, according to John Ratey, M.D., who wrote “Spark.” And guess what? Even if you exercise for 30 minutes a day, sitting for 8 hours still has negative health effects.
Exercise and movement aren’t just good for your heart and lungs. They’re also super important for your brain, according to Dr. Ratey, a psychiatry professor at Harvard Medical School. You know how exercise and learning have always been done together? Well, exercise actually stimulates the brain in amazing ways and even makes new brain cells! Dr. Ratey says that not moving enough can cause anxiety, depression, ADHD, dementia, and other neurological and metabolic diseases.
So, what can you do about it? Any extra movement and exercise, and less sitting, will make you healthier. But remember, aim for that 12-mile mark! If you don’t exercise, you’re basically getting sicker every day you skip it. Don’t wait any longer!
